PDF/X facilitates the creation and validation of PDF/X-compliant files by eliminating many of the color, font, and trapping variables that lead to printing problems. PDF/X doesn’t replace PDF; rather, it is a subset of Adobe PDF that helps isolate the contents of a PDF file intended for prepress use, or notifies a user of missing items needed to ensure correct output. PDF/X may be used wherever PDF files are exchanged as digital masters for print production--whether at the creation or output stage of the workflow, as long as the applications and output devices support PDF/X.

PDF/X-1a Supports only a CMYK (and spot-color) workflow, targeted to a specific output device (for example, web offset printing according to SWOP).

Characteristics of PDF/X-1a files:
The PDF/X-1a is always pdf 1.3 or Acrobat 4.0 compatible with ALL FONTS EMBEDDED. Color management is not allowed in PDF/X-1a the file, it must have a trapping key set with a TrimBox and ArtBox are specified.

PDF/X-1a is a real deal blue collar PDF file.

All Fonts Embedded: This is VERY important, PDF/X-1a files must not be passed to another unless it contains all of its font and images embedded. Unless you want to perform text edits, you should always subset the fonts as shown. Fonts Embedded and subset in PDF/X-1a is imperative.

No Color management Allowed: The best color management is really simple, proof your scans and be sure they are good. Scans should really be reviewed for quality by the designer. If you expect great color, then put some effort into your scaning and color correction.

Only CMYK (+ spot-color) workflow: PDF/X-1a is targeted to a specific output device (the most common standard, web offset printing according to SWOP). The PDF/X-1a file should not contain RGB images and Extra Spot Colors. Make sure all your PDF/X-1a files are completely clearly separated.

Trapping and Imposition Supported: PDF/X-1a file must have a trapping key set for the RIP to know if it's already trapped or not. This must be set to Trapped True, or Trapped False. PDF/X-1a file has a TrimBox and ArtBox are specified so that imposition programs can impose pages accurately.
